PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN DUBAI

The most common public transportations in Dubai are taxis, buses and the water taxis which are called "Abra". Taxis are relatively cheap during the day when they are metered. After midnight most of the meters are off and each fare is determined individually. Like in big cities of other countries taxi drivers will try and take the longest way to your destination once they realise that you are a visitor. Therefore you should have a look in your map or get driving directions from your hotel before taking a taxi.

Buses are a cheaper alternative and provide air conditioning, but they can still get really hot during the summer months. Dubai has a total of 62 different bus routes and over 400 bus schedules. There are approximately 1500 bus stops located within the city which makes it easy to get wherever you want to go.

The more traditional method of transportation is to take an "Abra", a water taxi, to get across the creek which divides the city. There are two different kinds: the Rowing Abra and the Motorized Abra. The rowing Abra is the more traditional one and costs 1 Dh (0.21 €) per person to cross the river and 30 Dh (6.30 €) for a pleasure trip of one hour. The motorized one is even cheaper and costs 50 fils (0.11 €) to cross the creek. Again there are pleasure trips available for 50 Dh (10.50 €) per hour.
