GOVERNMENT IN DUBAI
The United Arab Emirates are ruled by seven hereditary sheikhs (known as emirs). There are no elections or political parties and the seven traditional sheikhdoms each named after its principal town: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al Qaiwain, Ras al Kamiah and Fujairah are ruled by an emir and known as an emirate.
Sheikh Zaid vin Sultan al Nahayan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi, has been President since 1971, and was last re-elected in 1991 by his colleagues on the Supreme Council of Rulers (the highest body in the country) who meet informally. The ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid al Maktoum is the Vice President and Prime Minister. The various cabinet posts are distributed among the seven emirates.
