DRIVING REGULATIONS IN DUBAI
Dubai's driving regulations are very strict and have to be followed not only by locals but also by those who are in Dubai for business, leisure and other purposes. Offences are punished by law with fines, prison and (for Muslims only) lashes. Therefore it is advisable not to drive at all during a stay in Dubai or quickly become familiar with the driving regulations.
In the case of an accident in which another party is injured, anyone involved automatically goes to jail (innocent or guilty) until the injured party is released from the hospital. If a person dies in a traffic accident, the driver of the other car is liable for a payment of compensation ("dhiyya"), which is approximately $41,000.
Always carry your driving licence. Your international license is only valid till the date on which you obtain your residence visa / whilst having a visitor's visa. After this time you need to apply for a UAE licence.
The blood alcohol limit in Dubai and the rest of the UAE is 0.0, seatbelts must be worn at all times and driving on the hard shoulder will incur heavy penalties and loss of your licence. Below are some other offences with their fines:
- Parking in a manner which could endanger pedestrians or impede their movement: 100 Dh
- Throwing litter out of the vehicle onto public road: 100 Dh
- Exceeding speed limit (by radar): 200 Dh
- Not wearing a helmet when driving a motorcycle: 200 Dh
- Driving recklessly and causing danger to public: 200 Dh
- "Jumping" red traffic signals: 500 Dh
- Overtaking where prohibited: 400 Dh
